Club History

Opened for Play 1n 1995

In 1991, a small group of lawn bowlers in Parksville decided that our city needed its own lawn bowling green.  It took four hard years of fundraising to make that dream a reality and the first full season started in May of 1995.

From Day One, volunteers groomed and cared for both the green and the lovely flower beds that lined it.   Using their own tools from home, they helped to make the whole club take shape.  As years passed, equipment was purchased which helped to reduce some of the heavy duty manual labour.

Originally, a monthly newsletter and telephone network were used to advise club members of important dates and events.  By 2006, however, computers were much more common and the Monday Morning Messages came to be.

Since its inception, the club has grown from tents to a more permanent structure, compete with a great kitchen, commercial dishwasher and stand-up freezers suitable for food preparation and storage.  Club dinners and fun/food events are all part of our club’s social development.

In 2008, our groundskeeper and crew removed the shrubs and hedges that were invading the green.  Xeriscaping was installed to help conserve water, provide a beautiful backdrop and to protect the green.  Amy, “The Goose Chasing Dog” has been on “green patrol” for a number of years, protecting it from the geese and the damage  they are capable of doing.

The club moved away from whites as the dress uniform for bowls in 2009.  Today, team colours are fine  for tournaments and there is now a more relaxed dress code in effect.

COVID 19 and the ensuing pandemic impacted everyone.  Our club shut down completely for the 2020 season and modified play, with restrictions, began in 2021.  By 2022, a full season was permitted, but as a precaution, masks were still mandatory in the club house.

PLBC was honoured to host both the 2005 and 2014 Canadian Mixed Pairs.  Competitors came from across Canada and the 2014 event was televised by Shaw T.V.  Our club consistently  has encouraged members to excel and has shown success in local, provincial and national tournaments.

PLBC started as, and continues to be, a welcoming family of lawn bowlers, spreading the joy of the game of lawn bowling to all.
